BCCI President Sourav Ganguly stated that India will host the 15th edition of the IPL. The last two seasons have seen the matches largely being played in the UAE due to the pandemic. South Africa were also in contention to host the 2022 IPL, but ultimately the organizers have chosen to hold the fixtures in India across limited venues.

The dip in the curve of a third wave is a promising sign in terms of the tournament being hosted in India. Last year Chennai, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Delhi and Kolkata were chosen to host the matches in separate legs. However, a bio-bubble breach early into the second leg caused the event to be suspended and shifted to the UAE.

In an interview with Sportstar, Ganguly said that the matches are likely to be hosted by Mumbai and Pune. He said:

It will be held in India this year, until and unless COVID-19 hits the roof. As far as venues are concerned, we are looking at hosting the matches in Maharashtra – Mumbai, and Pune. We will take a call on the venues for the knockout stages later.

Narendra Modi stadium in Ahmedabad is touted to host the knockout matches. Mumbai and Pune have 4 venues across them and air travel can be eliminated as well since the venues are accessible by road.

Ganguly also proceeded to confirm that India will host its second day-night Test during the upcoming home series against Sri Lanka. Bengaluru has been chosen as the venue to host the contest. He added:

“Yes, the pink-ball Test will be happening in Bengaluru. We have not decided on all the venues for the Sri Lanka series yet, but it will be announced shortly.”

Mohali and Dharamsala are the two other venues that will host the matches against Sri Lanka next month. The team are currently battling a COVID-19 outbreak in Ahmedabad ahead of the limited-overs series against West Indies.
