Former India captain and BCCI President Sourav Ganguly has made a stunning comment saying that winning IPL is more difficult than winning the World Cup.

Team India will be gearing up for the World Cup later this year. Before that they have suffered a defeat in the first session on Day 5 of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia at The Oval on Sunday, June 11. Notably, Australia won the ICC World Test Championship for the first time by thrashing India by a margin of 209 runs in a match that was dominated by the Aussies.

After being put to bat first, Australia amassed 469 runs. They then dismissed India for 296 runs, gaining a 173-run lead in the opening inning. India were given a 444-run target as Australia concluded their second innings at 270 for 8. The Rohit Sharma-led team was bowled out for 234 runs and went on to lose yet another opportunity of winning an ICC event.

Fans have blamed Indian Premier League (IPL) for Team India’s lackluster performance in the WTC final against Australia. IPL 2023 final was played on the reserve day on May 29 which gave the players just one week to prepare for the all-important fixture.

Captain Rohit Sharma also pointed out that the team didn’t get much time to prepare for the WTC final which could’ve made the difference in the big game.

With the fans and experts being a vocal critics of the IPL, former India captain Sourav Ganguly has given a startling statement in favor of the T20 extravaganza. Ganguly said that winning IPL is even more difficult than winning the World Cup as you need to play consistently across 14 matches in order to qualify for the knockouts in the IPL as opposed to World Cup.

“Winning the IPL is even more difficult than winning the World Cup. You’ve to play 14 matches then Playoffs in the IPL whereas you qualify for Semis and then Final after 4-5 matches in the WC,” said Ganguly on Aaj Tak.
