Sourav Ganguly, the director of cricket for the Delhi Capitals and a former captain of India, has expressed gratitude for the WPL’s influence on women’s cricket in India. Ganguly attended the WPL auction on Saturday, December 9 in Mumbai.
Delhi, which took second place in the WPL’s first season, had three spots up for grabs and a prize of Rs 2.25 crore going into the auction. Notably, they had released Jasia Akhtar, Aparna Mondal and the USA fast bowler Tara Norris, who picked up the tournament’s first five-wicket haul.
To fill the final three positions, DC roped in Annabel Sutherland for INR 2 crore, Aparna Mondal for INR 10 lakh, and Ashwani Kumari for INR 10 lakh. DC spent a lot of money on Sutherland to win the auction and defeat the Mumbai Indians, who were fierce competitors. She was introduced as the first player at the auction. She additionally turned into the second-most costly Australian player ever to be auctioned off at a WPL.
Following the auction, Ganguly stated that the WPL is having a huge impact on women’s cricket in India and that it will only get better. Thirty players were purchased for a total of Rs 12.75 crore at the 2024 WPL auction.
“This is a huge tournament, and I’m so happy to see where it has gone from the first year. This was always in our minds for quite a bit of time, but didn’t happen because of Covid. But what it did last year for the women cricketers is phenomenal. The tournament last year was brilliant and it’s only going to get better,” said Ganguly.
