India’s Sonia Chahal beat North Korea’s Jo Son Hwa in the semi-finals of the 57kg category to reach the finals of the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships at the KD Jadhav Indoor Hall in New Delhi in her debut appearance. She will take on Germany’s Ornella Wahner in the finals tomorrow.
The first round was an evenly contested one with both the competitors connecting a couple of punches cleanly. The second round had the same story as Jo San played brilliantly defensively to duck Sonia’s punches. However, in the third round, it was all Sonia.
The 21-year-old outclassed the North Korean in every department and landed a lot of thunderous punches cleanly. It impressed the judges, and she was awarded a 5-0 victory.
Later in the day, Simranjeet Kaur lost to China’s Dan Dou in the semi-finals of the light welterweight category to settle for a bronze medal.
Sonia became the second Indian to make it to the finals of the 2018 Women’s World Boxing Championships. Yesterday, Mary Kom overwhelmed Kim Hyang-Mi of North Korea in the light flyweight category to book her place.
The Sportsindiashow team wishes both the pugilists all the best in their finals tomorrow.
