How match condition simulation is helping PV Sindhu to prepare for the Olympics

A year after its postponement, the global athletics fraternity is gearing up carefully for the upcoming Tokyo Olympic Games. However, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic is still being felt, as it has caused the cancellation of a number of pre-Olympics tournaments. But, Indian shuttling icon PV Sindhu has found a workaround to the lack of international events.

Before the Olympics kicks off on 23rd July, there will be only one badminton tournament hosted, that is, the Singapore Badminton Open 2021 -BWF Super 500 Event, which will take place from 1st to 6th June.

With the guidance from her coach Park Tae Sang, Sindhu has been trying out the simulation of tournament match situations during her training sessions, to keep herself physically and mentally ready for the Olympics.

“Well, we were thinking that Singapore will be the last event before the Olympics but now we don’t have another option, so I am playing matches against different players and my coach Park is trying to create match situations for me in training,” Sindhu said in an interview with PTI.

While the players Sindhu is facing during the simulations have different playing styles to replicate the varieties of challenges that are faced during competitions, she has full faith on her South Korean mentor for it.

“Different players have different styles. Tai Tzu (Ying) or Ratchanok (Intanon) have different styles of play but Park is there to guide me, to prepare me for it,” the 25-year-old went on, “we will be playing each other after a few months and there will be something new in our games, so I will have to prepare for that.”

Sindhu is currently training at the Gachibowli indoor stadium in Telangana, separate from the rest of the Tokyo-bound Indian shuttlers contingent. The 2016 Rio silver medallist also undergoes her fitness training at Suchitra Academy in Hyderabad.
