Opener Shubman Gill could be ruled out of the five-match test series against England beginning next month due to an undisclosed injury. With the majority of the backup openers being part of the Sri Lanka tour, Abhimanyu Eeswaran is the candidate that is slated to be called up to the squad.
Since the nature of the injury is yet to be known, the involvement of a possible surgery remains unanswered as well.
According to sources, the youngster has suffered a hamstring tear or a calf injury. As of now, his status is being monitored by team physio Nitin Patel and strength and conditioning coach Sohum Desai.
The apparent internal injury seems to be serious which could keep him off the field for a considerable amount of time.
“There is a chance that Shubman could be ruled out of the whole Test tour even though it is still a month away. The injury is serious as we have come to know,” a senior BCCI official claimed
There is a slim chance that Gill could return to the squad since the inaugural series of the second cycle of the WTC begins from August 4 and culminates on September 14.
Shubman Gill was set to open the innings alongside Rohit Sharma for the tour despite a bleak set of outings in the WTC Final.
Team India have Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul as a potential choice of openers to partner alongside Rohit Sharma.
The team are currently in the middle of a two-week break and they have been instructed to report for the camp on July 14. Given their eight-wicket defeat in the WTC Final, the management have also requested the ECB for a four-day warm-up fixture against a county side. Apart from that, the team is also expected to contest intra-squad matches for game practice.
