Shubman Gill was included in the squad for the ODI and Test series and is currently giving the team a selection headache ahead of the pink ball test. The top-order batsman claimed that playing Australians in their own backyard can be quite intimidating and explained his approach should the opposition have a go at him.

The young batsman could pip Prithvi Shaw for an opening spot alongside Mayank Agarwal after a good outing in the warm-up fixture. Gill scored 43 and 65 across both the innings in the three-day match that ultimately ended in a draw. The U-19 World Cup-winning player could finally make his test debut after having only represented the country in a couple of ODIs so far.

In an interview with his IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders, Gill stated that he is looking forward to playing in Australia.

“It’s quite intimidating to play Australia in Australia, but I am really looking forward to it. As a batsman, there is no bigger opportunity than to play against Australia at their home as your confidence gets a major boost if you manage to score runs here,”

Speaking about the temperament and the attitude of the Indian players on the field, Gill opined that times have certainly changed. He stated that if Australians have something up their sleeve, the Indian contingent are also not that far behind in that department.

“There was a time when (Indian) players had a reputation of not being too aggressive, and people would take that for granted when sledging. Things have changed now,” he said.

“Every character is different, some people like to keep quiet and not react while for others, engaging in a verbal-battle eggs them on to do better. For me, I’m neither the kind to always keep quiet, nor the type to keep going at the opposition. But if the plan is to make us dance to their chin music, be rest assured we’ve got plenty of great moves in store.”

The rivalry between India and Australia is arguably one of the most intense in world cricket. However, the recently concluded limited-overs series saw the sides take a rather friendly approach to each other which has received mixed reactions from pundits and fans alike. Only time will tell if the test series brings out the hostility or will friendship triumph rivalry once again.
