With the news that Hardik Pandya would be traded to the Mumbai Indians, Shubman Gill was named the new captain of the Gujarat Titans. Gill will take Hardik’s place, who steered the Titans to winning the 2022 and 2023 title games.

It has been noted that the Gujarat Titans selected three players, including Shubman Gill, through the draft procedure before the 2022 Indian Premier League season began. Gill was acquired for just Rs 7 crore, whilst Rashid Khan and Hardik Pandya each cost the Gujarat Titans Rs 15 crore. However, Gill’s reputation has grown over the past two years as he has proven to be a consistent player for the senior national cricket team in all formats.

Shubman Gill will become one of the youngest captains to lead a franchise on a full-time basis. Virat Kohli was 22 when he stepped in as captain for Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2011.

While Gill has no prior IPL leadership experience, Gujarat is hoping to repeat their success with Hardik, who silenced critics during his Titans captaincy. With Ashish Nehra as head coach and his two years with Hardik Pandya under his belt, Gill will have strong backing at Gujarat Titans.

Shubman Gill reacts

“I am delighted and proud to assume the Captaincy of Gujarat Titans and thank the franchise for their trust in me to lead such a fine team. We have had two exceptional seasons and I keenly look forward to leading the team with our exciting brand of cricket,” Shubman Gill said in a statement.

At Gujarat Titans, Shubman Gill amassed 483 runs in the first season. The 2023 season was record-breaking as Shubman Gill hit 890 runs, including 3 hundreds, at a staggering strike rate of 157.80.
