Shubman Gill’s meteoric rise has been a pleasure to watch for the Indian cricketing fraternity. The young batsman is expected to walk alongside Rohit Sharma in the World Test Championship, an assignment that will be his biggest to date.
Ahead of the highly-anticipated fixture, Team India’s fielding coach R Sridhar has lavished praise on the youngster by claiming him to be the most complete athlete.
In a chat with the Times Of India, Sridhar noted Gill’s athletic frame and impeccable hand-eye coordination.
“Talking about Shubman, I feel he is the most complete athlete I have seen. He is slim, tall, runs fast, and has got good hand-eye coordination. On most occasions when a new player comes in – we know his strengths and weaknesses as we would have seen him play in the IPL or in India ‘A,” said Sridhar in a chat with the Times of India.
“My job as the fielding coach is to make sure his mindset is in tune with the national team. We also observe his hand-eye coordination, his reflexes, how good his hands are, his speed to the ball and ability to throw from the deep and ball sense,” he added.
Those attributes could be seen right from Gill’s first major International venture when he caught a stunning catch against Pakistan in the 2018 U-19 World Cup.
Moreover, the team could use his hand-eye coordination for fielding up close. Despite struggling in the slip cordon as of late, India will line up in the seniors behind the stumps leaving Gill to play a prominent role by fielding at silly point and short leg.
Fielding aside, Gill has been facing a rough few months after making a bright start to his career in Australia. Emerging as one of the leading run-scorers in the series, a lot was expected from the 21-year-old.
However, the youngster endured a lean home series against England and followed it up with a poor IPL season which was halted midway.
Gill will have to be at his very best to ward off one of the most potent pace attacks in the world with a brand new Dukes cherry. Openers are the group of players who have been affected the most while playing in England. The usual overcast conditions and the movement in the air and off the seam make things really difficult early on.
