India’s talented young opener Shubman Gill has achieved a unique feat in his Test debut against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Saturday. The batsman put up a fearless batting against the mighty Aussies and scored 45 runs off 65 balls on the second day of the Boxing Day Test, before getting out by Australia pacer Pat Cummins.

Gill, with his knock, has become the third-highest run-getter on Test debut for India in Australia. His opening partner in the Test, Mayank Agarwal placed at the top of the list who scored 76 on his debut Down Under in 2018. Notably, former Indian cricketer, Dattu Phadkar is second in the list, who had smashed 51 runs on his debut in Sydney in December 1947.

Shubman Gill was included in the squad ahead of Prithvi Shaw for the Melbourne Test following Shaw’s poor show in Adelaide. The Punjab batsman smashed eight boundaries during his stay in the middle, providing India with stability after an early dismissal of Agarwal for a duck on Day 1 as well.

The youngster got lives twice during his stint in the middle. He was dropped on 4 when he Marnus Labuschagne failed to tea the catch at slip on the first day of the play. Later, Australian skipper Tim Paine failed to grab a routine catch behind the stumps when the debutant was batting on 28.

However, Shubman Gill missed out on his maiden Test fifty by 5 runs but stabilized the ship with a 61-run stand with Cheteshwar Pujara before getting dismissed and the partnership helped his team as well.

Meanwhile, India lost two wickets in two overs to Pat Cummins as Australia took early wickets on the second day. However, after resuming on 36 for 1 on Sunday, India started carefully before losing both their steady batsmen within 11 balls to reach 90 for three at lunch. Later, the stand-in captain Ajinkya Rahane smashed his 12th hundred as India reached 268 for 5 in 88 overs, taking a lead by 73 runs.
