While Shreyas Iyer led Delhi Capitals got off to a flying start in the 2020 edition of Indian Premier League (IPL), they got a big blow when their key spinner Amit Mishra’s injury left him out of the cash-rich T20 league for this season. He sustained an injury in the ring finger of his bowling hand while trying to take a return catch off his bowling during their game against the Kolkata Knight Riders in Sharjah on October 3.
However, captain Shreyas Iyer said that they are prepared to back up any such incidents in every way possible. And, youngster Axar Patel replaced in the playing XI in their last game against Royal Challengers Bangalore where Prithvi Shaw’s blitzy 42 off 23 with 5 fours and 2 sixes and Marcus Stoinis’ onslaught (unbeaten 53 off 26 with 6 fours and 2 sixes) lifted them to a decent competitive total of 196/4 in their allotted 20 overs.
While defending, Rabada picked up 4 wickets for 24 whereas Patel and Anrich Nortje claimed 2 wickets each ad restricted the opponents within 137 runs. With this win, Delhi placed at the top of the points table with four out of five wins.
“Getting four out of five, I will take that any day. Kudos to the boys and the temperament shown in pressure situation. Our strategy was to be fearless and play with full freedom,” Iyer said.
“We have got good youngsters in our side, so we just need to go out and execute our talent and skills. I am very happy with the way things are going so far, and we need to keep up the momentum. When we come onto the ground, we talk about comprehensive victories,” he further added.
“It is saddening when a senior player (Mishra) who was doing amazingly well gets injured but we have got good replacements as well. Chopping and changing spoils the atmosphere in the team so we’re trying to keep it really simple,” Iyer shared in the post-match presentation.
Delhi Capitals will take on Rajasthan Royals in their next game on Friday, October 9.
