Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have named Shreyas Iyer as their captain ahead of the IPL 2022 season. The franchise roped in the 26-year-old for a sum of 12.25 crore at the recently concluded mega auction.
The two-time winners were on the lookout for a captain after releasing Eoin Morgan ahead of the auction. The team went heavy for Iyer at the auction and made the winning bid on Day 1 of the auction.

Iyer did not come to an agreement with his former franchise Delhi Capitals after they appointed Rishabh Pant as the full-time captain. The flamboyant batter has been a successful skipper ever since taking over from Gautam Gambhir in 2018. He led the Capitals to a third-place finish in his first full season as captain and then followed it up with a finals appearance in 2020.
Shreyas Iyer stated that it is a huge honor to be able to captain the franchise and thanked the owners and management for the opportunity. He said:
“ I am extremely honoured to have gotten the opportunity to lead a prestigious team like KKR. The IPL as a tournament brings the best players from different countries and cultures together and I look forward to leading this great group of very talented individuals.”
Following the appointment, head coach Brendon McCullum expressed his pleasure and stated that he looks forward to working with Iyer.
“I am very excited to have one of India’s brightest future leaders in Shreyas Iyer, take the reins at KKR. I’ve enjoyed Shreyas’ game and his captaincy skills from afar and now will look forward to working closely with him to drive forward the success and style of play we want at KKR”
KKR had an eventful outing at the auction after coming into the event by retaining four players. The team have built a squad surrounding the four retained players and will look to stake a claim for their third title after finishing second in the 2021 IPL.
