Shreyas Iyer will continue as the captain of the Delhi Capitals for the upcoming season. The franchise affirmed their faith in Iyer and ruled out any change in leadership following the arrival of former Australia and Rajasthan Royals skipper Steve Smith.
Iyer was handed the leadership mantle in the 2018 edition when Gautam Gambhir elected to step down. Following the rebranding, Iyer has ushered the Capitals into a dominant side. The team finished third in Iyer’s first full season in charge. The franchise also marked their maiden appearance in the finals of the competition under him.
“We backed Shreyas when we promoted him to be the captain. Under him, the team came third in 2019 and reached the final in 2020. He is growing as a leader. I am sure the team will continue to do well under his leadership,” Capitals CEO Col. Vinod Bisht told TOI
During the team’s jersey launch, the CEO stated that experienced players such as Ajinkya Rahane, Steve Smith and Ravichandran Ashwin will act as mentors, especially for the young players.
“Any of the seniors who come in, be it Rahane, Ashwin or Steve Smith, they have a lot of knowledge to impart to the young camp. We expect all the seniors will continue to do so including Steve Smith,”
Delhi Capitals have had a surge in the recent past and the CEO attributes the same to their investment in youth. He also explained the strategy deployed in the auctions since the venues were undecided back then.
“We had a young team which has been groomed for the last 3-4 years. Now they have flowered. If the youngsters continue to do well, we will look to have them with the two new teams coming in next year,”
“There was a lot of uncertainty. Idea is to have a balanced squad.”
In the auctions, the team snapped Tom Curran as their most expensive purchase while Steve Smith was secured just over his base price. Umesh Yadav and Sam Billings were the other capped players roped in by the IPL 2020 finalists.
Delhi Capitals will open their campaign against the Chennai Super Kings in the second day of the competition.
