Last night’s clash between Delhi Capitals and Kings XI Punjab turned out to be one dramatic affair, as the very second match of IPL 2020 saw a super over victory for DC. However, the captain of the winning side Shreyas Iyer is now facing imputation from other franchises and even officials, regarding his comments towards BCCI prez Sourav Ganguly before the game in Dubai yesterday.

Before assuming the position of BCCI chief, Sourav Ganguly mentored the Delhi Capitals team in the last IPL alongside Ricky Ponting and was with the franchise until his resignation in October.

They make your job easy: Shreyas Iyer lauded Ganguly and Ponting together

After last night’s coin flip, Shreyas Iyer gave his two cents about his current gaffer Ponting and also said a couple of words praising Ganguly, saying that he was lucky to have both of them around him at the moment.

“As a captain, you need a very good temperament and I think I’ve gained that over the years. Obviously, when you have the likes of Ricky Ponting and Sourav Ganguly around you, they make your job easy,” Iyer, who scored a swift 39-off-32 last night, said before the match.

Now, Iyer’s comment about Ganguly ‘making his job easy’, has not been received well by other franchises as well as some BCCI officials, seeing that a skipper is associating with the chief of the tournament’s governing body.

“It would’ve been understandable had Iyer credited Ganguly in general, considering he was there as mentor with Delhi Capitals until last year. But Iyer specifically mentioned Ganguly as part of the unit that’s been helping him this year too,” franchise owners and board officials were quoted by Times of India.

Questions were also raised back in June this year when JSW cement, the sponsors of Delhi Capitals made Ganguly the brand ambassador.

On the other hand, sources within DC have come in defence of their captain.

“Iyer is a cricketer. He’ll talk cricket. He did nothing wrong in expressing how the team has been preparing well for the season. It is the franchise and the BCCI’s responsibility to look into these areas that don’t really show BCCI and IPL in good light” said those in the know.

DC’s next face-off is against Chennai Super Kings on 25th September at the Dubai International Stadium.
