Delhi Capitals skipper Shreyas Iyer has been deemed fit to play cricket after completely recovering from a shoulder injury. He had sustained the injury in March during England’s tour of India.
Iyer had to miss India’s tour of Sri Lanka as a result, during which he was undergoing rehabilitation after the surgery. The player is expected to play a huge role for Delhi Capitals in the remaining half of the 2021 IPL as well as stake a claim for a place in the T20 World Cup squad.
“Yes, NCA has issued a fit certificate to Shreyas. He stayed in Bengaluru at the NCA for a week and his final assessment has happened few days back. Based on all medical and physical parameters, he is now ready to play matches.
“This couldn’t have happened at a better time with India’s T20 World Cup campaign in two months time,” a senior BCCI source told PTI on the condition of anonymity.
Iyer has been undergoing the rehab programme as per BCCI’s advisory at the MCA Ground in Mumbai and has to clear the mandate fitness tests to be deemed completely eligible for a return into the side.
Shreyas Iyer was seen playing football with the likes of MS Dhoni and Ranveer Singh earlier this month as well.
The return of Shreyas Iyer leaves his IPL franchise in a tough spot. In the absence of Iyer, Rishabh Pant has been leading the side and are currently table toppers as well. However, Iyer has been leading the revamped side for the last three years and has led the team to the playoffs under his captaincy in full seasons.
Iyer also faces competition from the likes of Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan for a spot in the Indian middle-order for the all-important T20 World Cup. Iyer has to gather pace with Yadav looking in sublime touch during the recently concluded tour of Sri Lanka.
