Team India took a 1-0 lead in the series against Sri Lanka in Colombo. The batsmen made easy work of the 263 run target set by the hosts. Prithvi Shaw’s aggressive knock at the top of the order made things easy later on for the rest of the batting line-up.

'Rahul sir didn't say anything': Prithvi Shaw on his explosive knock in the first ODI

Opening alongside his Delhi Capitals’ teammate Shikhar Dhawan, Shaw donned the role of the aggressor. The young batsman was in full flow as he managed to dispatch good deliveries to the boundary with ease.

Shaw helped the team cruise at a run rate of over 10 in the powerplay. However, he missed out on a chance to make something out of a stellar start. He fell seven short of his fifty, the rapid 24-ball knock included 9 fours.

Shaw was awarded the man of the match for his fluid innings ahead of skipper Dhawan’s unbeaten 86. Upon receiving the award, the opener was asked about any specific instructions from coach Rahhul Dravid.

“Rahul sir didn’t say anything, I just went with my instinct and waited for the loose balls. Obviously wanted to keep the scoreboard ticking and yeah. Pitch was very nice. The first innings also was good but I think it got better in the second innings,” said Prithvi at the post-match presentation.

The 21-year-old dominated the opposition bowling attack dueing his time in the crease. But, he was fazed when hit by a ferocious bouncer by Dushmanta Chameera. The delivery managed to strike him on the helmet, which resulted in his neck guard being smashed as well.

He admitted that the blow resulted in a lack of focus from his side. Dhananjaya de Silva was able to extract a loose shot from him and as a result, break the threatening 58-run opening stand in the sixth over.

“I enjoy batting against pace. Maybe after being hit on the head I lost a bit of focus.” Shaw added

Shaw’s departure did not have a significant impact in India’s scoring rate. Ishan Kishan proceeded to take off from where Shaw left.

The flamboyant left-handed duo struck a solid partnership for the second wicket. Both of them struck fifties to get India closer to the target.
