39-year-old Sharath Kamal qualified for the fourth round of the men’s singles table tennis. He defeated Portugal’s Tiago Polonia six sets in the second round to advance.
The win came with its struggle as Sharath Kamal endured a rough start and lost the first set 2-11. He, however, came back strongly to win the next two sets. He was finally able to overcome his Portuguese counterpart after a 49-minute battle.
The paddler has a tough proposition up next in front of him. He is drawn to face current Olympic and World Champion Ma Long from China.
Ma Long has arguably dominated the sport having won every singles title on offer and is a legend at 32 years of age.
Apart from Sharath Kamal, paddlers have had a mixed outing so far at The Olympics. G Sathiyan squandered a lead and lost in the second round while in the women’s division, Manika Batra shows immense promise following her sets of wins.
