Apart from being known for his all-round abilities, former Pakistan captain, Shahid Afridi is also known for his strong opinions on many things. Recently, the former player gave a straight answer when he was asked to name the better captain between former India captain MS Dhoni and former Australia captain Ricky Ponting.
In an interactive session with his fans on social media site Twitter, Afridi didn’t take time in naming MS Dhoni the better captain than Ricky Ponting. Explaining the reasons why he chose Dhoni over Ponting, Afridi said that the former India captain built a team with youngsters which won several games for India.
“I rate Dhoni a bit higher than Ponting as he developed a new team full of youngsters,” wrote Afridi to a fan’s question.

MS Dhoni and Ponting are two of the most successful captains the game has ever produced who led their respective teams with utmost example.
Dhoni is the only captain to win all three ICC tournaments – 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 ODI World Cup, and 2013 Champions Trophy. Even, under his leadership, India also reached the No.1 spot in ICC Test rankings in 2010.
Ponting, meanwhile, led Australia to successive ODI World Cup titles in 2003 and 2007 as well.
However, no other cricketer has led the team in more international matches than MS Dhoni. The wicket-keeper batsman has led India in 332 (Including Tests, ODIs and T20Is) matches in which India have won 178, lost 120, tied 6 and drawn 15 matches. Moreover, Dhoni has an overall win percentage of 53.61 which is the second-best among Indian captains after current captain Virat Kohli, who has a win ratio of 64.64.
On the other hand, Ricky Ponting was the most successful among all captains in world cricket. In the 324 matches that he captained Australia, they won 220 games whereas they lost only 77 matches and 2 were ties and 13 ended up as draws as well.
