Footballers have ahistory of getting carded after bizarre goal scoring celebrations, which the referees aren’t always too fond of. Such an incident happened with Sergio Ramos, who was booked in Spain’s European qualifier match against Romania.
Yesterday’s game at the Arena Națională saw Robert Moreno’s La Rojas achieving a 2-1 victory over the Tricolorii, and the scoresheet was opened up by Ramos himself.
The 33 year old skipper scored from the spot in the 29th minute, and celebrated the match opener with a goggles celebration, mimicking an eyewear with his hands.
Soon after, the referee Deniz Aytekin showed the Real Madrid superstar a yellow card, interpreting that the center back was performing a mockery at the match officials.
However, in the post match interview, the Spaniard revealed that the German official got it wrong, and it was just a tribute to the player’s spectacles wearing nephew.
“It was for my nephew. We both wear glasses and it was for him. I did it to cheer him up, to dedicate the goal to him.”
“The referee thought I was gesturing to the stands.” he added.
Moments into the second half, Borussia Dortmund frontman Paco Alcácer converted the one goal lead into a 2-0. tapping in a smooth through from the Barcelona wing back Jordi Alba.
The Romanians managed to return one from their forward Florin Andone, who netted the ball in by the 59th minute.
Cosmin Contra’s boys almost managed to equalize a second goal, but were denied by the goalkeeper Kepa. The Chelsea star stopped a targeted header with his feet, securing the win.
Spain currently top Group F with 15 points, and will face Faroe Island next Monday.
