IPL 2021: Virender Sehwag rates Rishabh Pant’s captaincy 3/10 following narrow loss to RCB

Delhi Capitals have had a nail-biting start to the IPL campaign with four of their matches entering the last over. While they were on the winning side in the super over against SRH, a second loss marked their start in Ahmedabad against RCB. Former India opener Virender Sehwag did not mince his words while talking about Rishabh Pant’s captaincy following the defeat.

The newly appointed captain’s usage of his bowlers was not well received after his decision to hand Marcus Stoinis the final over yielded 23 runs.

Sehwag rated the captaincy of Pant 3 out of 10 and lambasted the southpaw’s use of bowlers and inability to turn the game around.

“I won’t give him even five marks out of 10 for his captaincy because you just can’t make such mistakes. If your main bowler isn’t bowling, your calculations go wrong – that’s what captaincy is all about. You need to take care of that. A captain must manage his bowling resources according to the situation.

“You need to learn that. Or else you hand over the ball to whomsoever you want. The capability of a skipper is measured by how he turns the game around. He needs to make changes in the bowling or field position accordingly,” Sehwag told Cricbuzz.

Rishabh Pant ended up with an unbeaten fifty, but the pace of the innings was questioned as he surprisingly ended with a strike rate of only 120 while Hetmyer remained unbeaten over a strike rate of 210.

The way Pant planned his innings was criticized by former bowler Ashish Nehra. He stated that the strategy employed was a poor one.

“The way Rishabh batted in the middle overs and the number of runs he missed out on during the death overs, that was nothing but a poor strategy. If Shimron Hetmyer had lost his wicket early, we could have seen DC losing by 25 runs,”

“They planned their chase poorly as two of your set batsmen returned unbeaten and you lost the game by 1 run. That shouldn’t have happened in this format,” Nehra said

DC missed out a chance to be on the top of the table with RCB taking the honors. They will next face KKR at the same venue tomorrow.
