Virender Sehwag hails Chris Gayle as the Don Bradman of T20 cricket

The ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) has once again witnessed the swashbuckling knock of Chris Gayle. While everyone including fans and cricket fraternity started praising him, former explosive India opener Virender Sehwag has also joined them.

He also praised Gayle, referring him to the Don Bradman of T20 cricket. During his stupendous knock for Kings XI Punjab against Rajasthan Royals in Abu Dhabi on Friday, Gayle surpassed 1000 T20 sixes too.

Sehwag applauded Chris Gayle in a tweet, adding: “T20 ka Bradman- Chris Gayle. Without a doubt the greatest that there has ever been”

Gayle smashed 99 and helped Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) to put up 185 for 4 wickets in their allotted 20 overs. However, the stunning West Indies cricketer was just one run short from his 23rd T20 ton when he was bowled by Jofra Archer off the fourth ball of the final over of Punjab’s innings.

Gayle smacked six fours and eight sixes on his way to 99 off 63 deliveries. Even, he surpassed 1,000 sixes in the shortest format of the game. He stitched a 120-run stand with the captain KL Rahul for the second wicket before a 41-run stand with Nicholas Pooran steered them to a massive total on the board.

Notably, he is the only player to have this record whereas the second place belongs to Keiron Pollard who has 690 sixes in his kitty. Former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum has 485 to his name as well. Among Indians, the closest one to this record is none other than Rohit Sharma with 376 sixes as well.

After his blitzy innings, Gayle said, “It was a good knock. I thought 180 is a good total. The wicket is good, and it will get better in the night. Getting out on 99 is unfortunate, but I have been there and done that.”

While speaking about the Jofra Archer delivery which bowled him out on 99, he said, “It was a good ball. This happens.”

However, the batsman was certainly not aware of his world record. While he was asked about that, he was utterly surprised and said, “Oh 1000 maximums? Another record. Still have to be hitting it well at the age of 41. Got to give thanks for that. To those who wanted a century, I am sorry I missed out today, but in my mind it is a century, all right?”
