Mathias Boe, the driving force behind the success of Indian badminton duo Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, has announced a temporary retirement from coaching. The Dane, a former world No. 1 and men’s doubles silver medalist from the London 2012 Olympics penned a heartfelt message on Instagram after the duo’s exit from the Paris 2024 Olympics men’s doubles competition.

In his post, Boe empathized with the players’ disappointment, acknowledging their hard work, dedication, and desire to bring a medal back to India. He praised their resilience, even in the face of injuries and pain.
But for Boe, his coaching days have come to an end—for now, at least. He expressed weariness from spending too much time in badminton halls and the stress of coaching. His decision marks a poignant farewell to a role that shaped Indian badminton.
Boe’s impact extended beyond the Paris Olympics. He had previously coached Indian doubles teams, including Satwik-Chirag, during the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Despite being released by the Badminton Association of India (BAI), he was reappointed after BAI failed to secure the services of Malaysia’s Tan Kim Her as the new coach.
Boe’s second stint with the Indian team was immensely fruitful, leaving an indelible mark on the players and the sport. The Indian duo won a bronze medal at the 2022 World Championships and a gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

In 2023, SatChi became the Asian Games champions and won the Asian Championships gold before becoming the first Indian badminton doubles team to rise to the top of the world rankings.
The Indian doubles aces also won several top-tier BWF World Tour tournaments, including the Super 1000 Indonesia Open in 2023, under Boe.
Boe is married to Indian Bollywood actor Taapsee Pannu and the couple recently celebrated the latter’s 37th birthday in Paris together.
