SARITA MOR WON A BRONZE IN THE 59KG CATEGORY

With yesterday’s podium finish, Mor became the first female wrestler from India to win four medals at Asian Wrestling Championship. Mor had won Gold medals in the 59kg category in both 2020 and 2022 editions of the event, but this time she faltered, losing to Mongolian Shoovdor Baatarjav and Japanese Natami Sara in her opening rounds.

While her opening losses evaporated all hope of a Gold medal winning finish, she recovered and defeated Uzbek Dilfuza Aimbetova by technical superiority, before winning a second match against Diana Kayumova of Kazakhstan. Her 5-2 victory over Kayumova vaulted her to a formidable Bronze medal winning finish.

“I am happy with my overall performance but equally disappointed. It was a close bout against the Mongolian wrestler and could have gone either way. My next target is to win the selection trials for the upcoming CWG and Asian Games and bring gold medals from both the tournaments,” she stated following her victory.

SUSHMA SHOKEEN WON A BRONZE IN THE 55KG CATEGORY

The 55kg and 59kg competitions featured a pool of five wrestlers each. Sushma Shokeen managed to win a Bronze in the former category. She lost her first match to Japanese competitor Inai Umi, only to destroy Altyn Shagayeva of Kazakhstan 5-0 in her next match. After another excellent victory, this time against Uzbek wrestler Sarbinaz Jienbaeva, she lost to Mongolian Otgonjargal Ganbaatar. The two wins were enough to catapult her to a Bronze-winning finish.

India has already won seven bronze medals in the 2022 edition of Asian Wrestling Championship. The first two days of the major continental tournament saw Greco-Roman wrestlers win five bronze medals. This was followed by Mor and Shokeen’s medals. Another wrestler – in the 50kg category – was in contention for a bronze, but could not manage to achieve it.
