Sanjay Manjrekar feels that Ajinkya Rahane would be lucky to get one more game

Former India batsman Sanjay Manjrekar feels that Ajinkya Rahane should consider himself lucky if he manages to get one more chance following his run of poor form. The Indian vice-captain is under a lot of pressure at the moment and is at risk of losing his spot in the middle order.

Rahane has only a string of low scores to his name in the calendar year so far and endured a tough time at The Oval as well. He was dismissed for an eight-ball duck in the second innings, which only worsened his cause.

With batsmen like Hanuma Vihari and Suryakumar Yadav are waiting for their opportunities, and Manjrekar feels that it is time that the change is made in the playing eleven, and if it is not, then Rahane is one lucky batsman. While speaking to Sony Sports, he said:

“Hanuma Vihari first and maybe Suryakumar Yadav. Very often you are surprised by players who are out in the reserves because you haven’t seen them and Ajinkya Rahane is not exuding confidence,”

He added that dropping people due to poor form is necessary and even cited himself as an example. He claimed that batsmen like Rahul Dravid would have never availed an opportunity had Manjrekar not been dropped from the Indian side. He added:

“You have an obligation to the guys waiting in the wings. That’s how you look at Indian cricket. If I wasn’t dropped, people like (Rahul) Dravid, and all those guys would not have come in,”

Rahane was demoted to No.6 in both innings with left-handed Ravindra Jadeja being preferred for the No.5 spot. Manjrekar added that Rahane has got a long rope and would be very lucky if he plays in the fifth Test at Manchester as well. He added:

“If he [Rahane] gets another game, he is a very lucky batter. I wish a lot of the other batters in the past were living in this era. He has got a very long rope. If he gets another game, that’s great for him,”
