Chennai Super Kings kicked off their 2020 Indian Premier League campaign with a comfortable chasing victory last night against defending champions Mumbai Indians in Abu Dhabi. The cherry on top for CSK fans was to see the return of Mahendra Singh Dhoni on the 22 yards, who registered his 100th IPL victory yesterday. Meanwhile, the franchise’ all rounding youngster Sam Curran hails the skipper as ‘genius’.
England international Sam Curran joined CSK from Kings XI Punjab ahead of this IPL season and showed admirable finesse with both the bat and ball in the win against Mumbai Indians last night. Along with a good economy of 7, Curran picked the vital wicket of MI opener Quinton de Kock.
However, what boggled the young Englishman’s mind was when Mahi decided to send him to the pitch when CSK was at 134/4 and still needed 29 runs from 17 balls to win. Needless to say, the captain’s decision worked wonders as Curran produced a quick 6-ball-18 including one four and two sixes in the final overs.
Sam Curran lauds MS Dhoni for sending him as no. 6 batsman
In the post-match interview, Sam Curran touched upon the prompt resolution by Dhoni to send him as the 4th down batsman, and hailed him as a ‘genius.’
“To be honest, very surprised I went in at number six but he’s (Dhoni) a genius, he obviously thought something. Great win in the end. I think the left-right combination was his plan,” Curran said in the interview.
“The 18th over from Krunal Pandya was the over we wanted to target – a six or out approach mentality. Take the risk, and if it comes off it comes off, if it doesn’t, it doesn’t,” the 22-year-old added.
Chennai will next take on Rajasthan Royals on 22nd September at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.
