Saina Nehwal, Ashmita Chaliha Cruise Into 2nd Round Of Thailand Open

Saina Nehwal and Ashmita Chaliha were the two Indians securing wins in their respective matches to cruise into the second round of the ongoing Thailand Open at the Nimibutr Stadium in Bangkok on Wednesday.

Taking on Wen Yu Zhang in her women’s singles outing, Saina produced a dominating  21-13, 21-7 straight set victory over the Canadian shuttler to secure her entry into the next round.

Ashmita, meanwhile, faced off against her compatriot Malvika Bansod in the other women’s singles clash, where she produced another straight game win (21-17, 21-14) to join Saina in the next round. Her upcoming opponent will be Olympic Champion Carolina Marin.

The men’s singles category, however, saw the exits of Kidambi Srikanth, Priyanshu Rajawat and B Sai Praneeth from the first round, while only Kiran George making progress into the next one with a 21-18, 22-20 straight set win over Shi Yuki of China.

Srikanth went down against Weng Hong Yang of China after a hard fought attempt to end up with an 8-21, 21-16, 14-21 loss. Praneeth’s run ended against Christo Popov of France in 14-21, 16-21 straight sets, while Priyanshu lost to Malaysia’s Ng Tze Yong.
