Dean Elgar led the South African side displayed a dominant show with the bat on Day 4 as the rainbow nation edged past the Indian attack to level the three-match test series. South Africa managed to chase down the tricky target of 240 runs with 7 wickets still in hand.
The first two sessions of the day were washed out due to rain and wet outfield but there was plenty of time left to play the final session of the day. South African batters Rassie Van der Dussen and Dean Elgar gave South Africa an aggressive start as runs poured in the first hour’s play.
Rassie van der Dussen played the aggressor’s role as scored a crucial 40 runs that included five fours before being dismissed by Mohammed Shami. The Indian bowlers had an off day as they were not consistent enough with their lines and lengths. Hence, they were unable to capitalize the demons in the pitch. The wet ball due to the conditions made matters worse for the Indian bowlers.
Dean Elgar plays a captains knock
South African captain Dean Elgar played one of the best innings of his career given that South Africa was facing one of the best bowling attacks in the fourth innings. Also, South Africa was under the pump after losing the first test. However, the skipper scored 96 valuable runs and was there till the end to see his team cross the line.
The man in form, Temba Bavuma, gave the finishing touches with his 23 not out as South Africa leveled the three-match series. This is India’s first defeat in Johannesburg in test matches. Now the decider test is set to be played in Cape Town as the series becomes more and more interesting.
