Rules of poker: All you need to know about the card game!

Poker is one of the most played card games all over the world. Played in many different variations, its popularity has engulfed casinos, poker clubs, private groups and now with the blessing of technology, even the internet. There are a number of online poker websites that are rising in popularity, as both casual players and poker enthusiasts face off against each other, testing their skill and luck.

Originated in 19th century United States, poker gained huge popularity, and has been called the national card game of the country, and has become an inseparable part of the American culture. From its many variants, Texas Hold’em and Omaha are the two most popular poker games in the world. Poker later found its way into the world of computers, as many websites were developed to let the players of the card game experience it in the virtual world, like IDN POKER.

Lets look at some basic rules below-

  • Card values and Score:

Poker is played using the standard 52 card deck, sometimes one or two joker cards are also used. To win any game, a player must have a solid idea on the fundamentals of betting, and ‘poker hands’ which consists of five cards. The values of the hands depend on the individual value of the different cards of the deck, and the total value of a hand ranges in descending order from ‘Five of a Kind’ (the highest possible hand), Straight Flush, Four of a Kind, Full House, Flush, Straight, Three of a Kind, Two Pairs, One Pair and ‘No Pair’ where none of the five cards in the hand pair up.

  • Dealing and Betting:

There are five actions a player can take regarding betting after the initial cards are dealt. These are- Check: to decline the chance of betting, Bet: to bet when no bets have taken place in an ongoing round, Fold: to forfeit a current hand, Call: calling to match the highest bet of a round and Raise: to match the highest bet of a round and raising it to a greater one.

  • Chips and Betting Limits:

Chips are an inseparable part of poker, and at least 200 chips are required for a game with seven or more players involved. There are three types of chips, which are coloured according to the value of bets. These are- White: also known as the ‘unit’ or the lowest valued chip, worth the minimum bet, Red: one red chip is worth five white chips of five units, and Blue: the highest valued chip. One blue chip is worth 10 or 20 or 25 white chips or units.
