The Indian skipper Rohit Sharma is one of the top batters in the ODI format. He has certainly witnessed how the dynamic of cricket has transformed over the years. The T20I format has been preferred by many for its fast-paced action over ODI and even Test format. However, as it seems, ‘The Hitman’ believes that ODIs are still an important and integral part of the game and he gives credit to the 50-over format for making a name for himself.
Rohit Sharma outlines the importance of ODI cricket
Rohit Sharma interestingly holds a unique record of scoring three double centuries in the format and stated that ‘playing for the country matters the most’ for him.
“Mera naam hi one-day cricket se bana hai. Sab bekar ki baatein hai. People were earlier talking about Test cricket. For me, cricket is important – whatever be the format. I would never say that ODI is getting finished or T20 is getting finished or Tests are nearing an end. I wish there is another format as well, because for me, playing the game is most important,” Rohit said on the sidelines of a Rohit Sharma sustainable collection launch by Adidas.
“Playing for the country matters the most. Since childhood, I dreamt of playing the game for India and in my mind. Whenever we play ODIs, stadiums are full, the excitement remains high. It’s an individual choice as to which format to play or not, but for me, all three formats are important…”
Till date, playing 233 ODI matches, Sharma has amassed a massive 9376 runs with an average of 48.58. He has registered 29 tons and 45 half centuries, alongside 3 double century. His highest score in the format is 264 runs.
