The selectors had initially wanted the leadership role in Test to be given to KL Rahul but his outings as captain in South Africa in the second Test at Johannesburg and in the ODIs were not impressive. Rahul has attained some degree of consistency in his batting across the formats, it is viewed that captaincy pressure might affect his overall performance.

“Without any doubt Rohit Sharma will be the new test captain of India. Rohit was named vice captain before the South Africa series & will now be elevated as captain of the team. The announcement will be made soon”, declared top BCCI official to InsideSport.

The BCCI official further informed InsideSport that selectors will also speak to Rohit on his workload & fitness related issues. “The workload will be immense. He need to keep himself very agile and fit. I think the selectors will have a word with him. He will have to work to extra-bit on his fitness”, said the BCCI official.

India is set to host West Indies next for a 3-match ODI series and the opening game to take place at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, February 6.
