Rohan Bopanna and Shuai Zhang’s journey at the Australian Open 2025 came to an end in a dramatic fashion as they bowed out of the mixed doubles quarterfinals. The Indo-Chinese pair faced off against local wild cards John Peers and Olivia Gadecki in a thrilling match that lasted one hour and eight minutes.

Rohan Bopanna-Shuai Zhang’s tough fight ends

Bopanna and Zhang started strong, winning the first set 6-2, but the Australian duo made a remarkable comeback, winning the second set 6-4 and clinching the match in the super tie-break 11-9. Despite having a match point in the super tie-break, Bopanna and Zhang couldn’t close out the match, ultimately losing 6-2, 4-6, 9-11.

The match was intense, with both pairs showcasing exceptional skill and determination. Bopanna’s powerful serves and backhand winners were a highlight, but the windy conditions and the pressure from the local crowd added to the challenge. Peers and Gadecki capitalized on a crucial break in the second set and managed to secure the victory with a strong finish.

This loss marked the end of India’s campaign at the Australian Open, with other Indian players like Sumit Nagal, Yuki Bhambri, and N Sriram Balaji also exiting at various stages of the tournament. Bopanna, who had previously won the men’s doubles title at the Australian Open last year, had earlier been knocked out in the first round of the men’s doubles this year. Despite the disappointment, Bopanna and Zhang’s performance was commendable, and they gave their best effort in a highly competitive match.
