Rohan Bopanna

Rohan Bopanna has reached the pinnacle position in Men’s doubles ATP World rankings on Thursday with a win in Quarter Finals against the Argentinian pair of Máximo González and Andrés Molteni(6-4, 7-6(5)). Bopanna, 43, also became the oldest player to achieve this feat in Men’s doubles. He surpassed Rajeev Ram of USA who previously held the record at 38.

Bopanna, who entered the tournament with a career high of World No.3, has joined the elite list of Indian Tennis greats like Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathi and Sania Mirza as World No.1 in doubles rankings.

With a win in QF, Rohan Bopanna will play the Semi Finals of Australian Open for the first time. After failing to win the title in US open last year, the Indo-Australian duo of Bopanna/Ebdeen are determined to make it count this time.

With the Paris Olympics just around the corner, the Olympic associations across the world are fast filling their quotas for the mega event. India already confirmed 51 athletes and this will be increased compared to 124 in the previous edition in Tokyo.

International Tennis Federation(ITF) is yet to announce the qualified athletes for Paris games. India will be backing it’s doubles pairs to clinch medals this time. Sumit Nagal had a decent Australian Open until second round. He won three qualifiers games to go with the first round. After an initial success in 2nd round, Nagal stumbled and let his opponent J.C Shang to take the win. With the qualification to the main draw, Nagal’s reservation in Men’s doubles at Olympics is very much anticipated.

Bopanna also expected to pair up with Rutuja Bhosale in Mixed Doubles. The pair won the Gold medal at the Asian Games in Hangzhou. The other Indian duo of Saket Myneni and Ramkumar Ramanathan, who won Silver at the Asiad, is another expected pair to reserve a spot for the Summer Games.
