The French Open 2024 witnessed an intense semi-final match in the men’s doubles category, where the Indo-Australian pair of Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden faced a challenging defeat. Bopanna and Ebden, the second-seeded duo, were up against the Italian pair of Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori. The match was a thrilling encounter that lasted for one hour and 58 minutes.
Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden lose despite a storng start
The Indo-Australian pair started strong, holding their first serve on love and breaking in the fourth game. However, the Italian duo responded with two breaks, taking the first set 7-5 in 48 minutes.
Bopanna and Ebden bounced back in the second set, racing to a 3-0 lead. They held all their serves and took the contest into the decider with the second break in the eighth game. Despite Bopanna’s strong performance in the decider, Ebden, who took multiple medical timeouts, seemed in discomfort. The Italian pair capitalized on this, breaking Ebden’s service games twice to secure their places in the final.
This defeat marked the end of Bopanna and Ebden’s journey in the French Open 2024. Interestingly, it was the same Italian pair they had defeated in the Australian Open final earlier this year. However, this time, Bolelli and Vavassori avenged their defeat.

Despite the loss, Bopanna and Ebden’s performance in the tournament was commendable. This was Bopanna’s second men’s doubles semi-finals at Roland Garros in three years. His only French Open Grand Slam title came in the mixed doubles with Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski back in 2017.
