Rising Mizo weightlifter Jeremy Lalrinnunga won the silver medal at the 2019 International Weightlifting Championships in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The 16-year-old lifted 131 kg in snatch and 157 kg in clean and jerk, summing up to 288kg in total. However, he was miles behind Indonesia’s Deni Deni, who won the gold in the 67kg category lifting a staggering 303kg.

Kiribati’s Ruben Katoatau won the bronze medal with a total lift of 285kg. This was India’s second medal in the silver level Olympic qualifying event, points of whose will be counted in the final rankings for the Tokyo 2020, after Mirabai Chanu clinched gold in the women’s 49kg category with a total lift of 192kg.

Jeremy Lalrinnunga shot to fame at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires after he became the first Indian to win Gold in the Youth Olympic Games. He lifted a total of 274kg in the Boys’ 62kg category then. Moreover, he was also aged 15 when he won gold.
