ENG vs IND: Rishabh Pant tests positive for COVID; will not travel to Durham

Team India have been hit with their first blow even before the series has commenced. The lengthy three-week break between the WTC Finals and the England tests have made their worst fears come true.

According to sources, two players tested positive for the virus. While one of them has returned back a negative result, the other player will be tested again on July 18th, after the 10th day of isolation.

“Luckily, there is nothing to worry as one of the players has already returned negative since testing positive, the other player will be tested on Sunday and is currently in isolation. He is asymptomatic as well and we are confident he can join the camp soon after the negative reports,” the source said.

The players were asymptomatic at the time of testing with only minor symptoms such as cold and cough being observed. The Indian camp is slated to assemble in Durham to play a three-day warm-up fixture. However, the player, who tested positive, will not be a part of that team.

“As of now, they all are fine, but we will be testing them regularly and following strict protocols. Safety of the players is always the priority,” the source added

The tests were conducted by England’s National Health Service and the name of the infected player should be released shortly. In addition, the player was seen in crowded places as well during the break between the two assignments.

According to recent developments, Rishabh Pant is the player who has contracted the virus. He was seen at the Wembley Stadium to witness England take on Germany.

The presence of the virus in the unit means more rigorous testing. The players will be tested once again as they assemble in Durham for their game.

COVID has been on a rise in England. The virus recently hit the England camp, and were forced to field a second-string unit for the ODI series against Pakistan.

The players were reportedly warned by BCCI secretary Jay Shah since the Covishield vaccine only provides protection and not full immunity. Squad members were suggested not to make their presence felt at crowded places including the Euros and the Wimbledon. But, several members of the Indian squad were seen attending the events in full capacity crowds.
