The Indian wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant has been appointed as the vice-captain of India by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for their upcoming 3-match T20I series against the West Indies. The series is set to start from February 16 as they two teams will lock horns in the opening clash at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. KL Rahul recently sustained a hamstring injury which will force him to miss out on the whole T20I series and Rishabh Pant will serve in the role of Rahul.
Rishabh Pant will be the vice-captain for the T20I series
KL Rahul sustained the hamstring injury during the ODI series, which India dominated and clean swept West Indies. Rahul did not take the field for the ODI series finale which India won.
Rishabh Pant has been slated to be one of the future leaders of the team. While the Delhi wicketkeeper hasn’t been part of the leadership group so far, his elevation to vice-captaincy shows that the Chettan Sharma-led selection panel has seen potential in him to be taking charge of the team down the line.
Rohit Sharma is leading India in the limited-overs format of the game, it remains to be seen who the selectors will back for the Test captaincy role. While KL Rahul led India in the 2nd Test in Virat Kohli’s absence, the BCCI hasn’t named a Test captain after Kohli quit from the role following India’s 1-2 defeat in the series in South Africa in January.
Rishabh Pant has lead the Delhi Capitals franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in the 2021 season. Pant was retained by Delhi Capitals as the former finalists built a squad around the aggressive wicketkeeper in the mega auction. The Men in Blue will also be missing out on their off-spinner Washington Sundar for the T20I series as he suffered a hamstring strain during the ODI series against the Windies and Kuldeep Yadav will replace him.
