Ricky Ponting’s new chapter with Punjab Kings
Ponting replaces Trevor Bayliss, who had been at the helm for the past two seasons. The Punjab Kings have struggled to make a significant impact in recent years, finishing ninth out of ten teams in the 2024 season. The franchise, which has never won the IPL since its inception in 2008, is hopeful that Ponting’s extensive experience and strategic acumen will bring about a much-needed turnaround.
Ponting’s Coaching Pedigree
Ricky Ponting’s coaching career is as illustrious as his playing days. He previously coached the Delhi Capitals, leading them to the IPL final in 2020. Although they fell short of winning the title, Ponting’s leadership was instrumental in transforming the team into serious contenders. He also had coaching stints with the Mumbai Indians, where he served as head coach in 2015 and 2016 and as an advisor in 2014.
In addition to his IPL experience, Ponting has been involved in various coaching roles globally. He was the head coach of the Washington Freedom in the 2024 Major League Cricket (MLC) season, guiding them to the title. Since 2021, he has also been the head of strategy for the Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League (BBL).
Vision for Punjab Kings
Expressing his excitement about the new role, Ponting said, “I am grateful to Punjab Kings for presenting me with the opportunity to be the new Head Coach. I am excited to take up this new challenge. I had great conversations with the owners and management about the way forward, and I was truly elated to see the alignment of our visions for the team. We all want to repay the fans who have stayed with the franchise over the years, and we promise that they will see a much different Punjab Kings going forward.”

Immediate Challenges and Goals
Ponting’s immediate task will be to identify players for retention ahead of the 2025 season, as the IPL finalizes its retention rules. The Punjab Kings have often been criticized for frequent chopping and changing, which has affected team stability. Ponting’s ability to develop cricketing and leadership skills will be crucial in building a cohesive and competitive squad.
The Punjab Kings’ sole final appearance came in 2014, and they have not made it to the IPL playoffs since. The franchise’s co-owners are optimistic that Ponting’s appointment will change their fortunes. Satish Menon, CEO of Punjab Kings, stated, “We are delighted to have Ricky on board to guide and build our team for the next four seasons. His experience is crucial to helping us develop a squad that can deliver on-field success. His insights from his international coaching stints and as a television pundit will be vital in identifying talent ahead of the mega auction this year.”
