Review of the 2022/23 Premier League Season

The 2022/23 Premier League campaign was another exciting season in England which saw Manchester City and Arsenal battle it out for the trophy for much of the campaign. The former came out on top in the end, finishing four points ahead of the Gunners.

It was a unique Premier League season, as the World Cup in Qatar forced the league to take a six-week break. It meant the campaign did not finish until the end of May, much later than the usual spot in the calendar.

Manchester City Champions Again

Pep Guardiola’s side’s title win was their third consecutive success in the Premier League. They finished their campaign strongly, with two wins coming over Arsenal in the final four months of the season.

It proved to be a season to remember for Manchester City fans, as their team completed the treble. They matched what rivals Manchester United achieved in 1999, by also winning the FA Cup and UEFA Champions League to go with their league title.

As of June 16, Manchester City is the odds favorite at -175 in the online betting to defend their crown next season. They will be bidding for a fourth straight win, something which has not been achieved in the Premier League era before.

Erling Haaland the Goals King

In what was his first season in England after making a summer move to Manchester City from Borussia Dortmund, striker Erling Haaland broke the Premier League record for the most goals in a campaign. The Norwegian found the back of the net 36 times in 35 games.

The addition of Haaland was a huge boost for City, as they knew they were getting one of the most prolific goalscorers in Europe. He has lived up to the hype that was around him before his move to Manchester.

Haaland has scored goals in key matches of the season for his side in the league. The challenge now for him is to match or better what he achieved in the 2022/23 campaign.

Brighton and De Zerbi’s Shine on South Coast

It proved to be another excellent season for Brighton in the Premier League. When the Seagulls lost manager Graham Potter to Chelsea earlier in the campaign, there were concerns about their future, however, they made an excellent appointment in Roberto De Zerbi, the former Italian league coach.

The Seagulls ended last season in sixth place which has been enough for them to qualify for the Europa League. They finished above both Tottenham (eighth place) and Chelsea (12th place), as they proved far more consistent than those London-based clubs.

Brighton will have a difficult job on their hands this summer keeping hold of their best players. They have already lost World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister who has joined Liverpool for £35 million.

Big Guns Miss Out on Champions League

There will be no Champions League football next season for Liverpool, Tottenham, and Chelsea. Those three clubs missed out on the top four. That will come as a big blow for them, not only financially, but it could almost impact their recruitment this summer.

Manchester United and Newcastle United will join Manchester City and Arsenal in the Champions League next season. For Newcastle, the last campaign will be seen as a huge success, as this was their best finish to a Premier League season since 2003.

Newcastle has been linked with some big-name stars this summer from the Spanish league and other major leagues in Europe. They will be hoping to take another step forward and challenge Manchester City at the top of the table.

Leicester Among Those relegated

Leicester City, Leeds United, and Southampton were the three clubs relegated to the Championship after finishing 18th, 19th, and 20th respectively. For Leicester, their relegation comes just seven years after lifting the Premier League title. They will be hoping to bounce right back up after appointing Guardiola’s assistant Enzo Maresca as their new head coach.

Leeds won just seven games last season in the Premier League in what was a disappointing campaign for the Yorkshire club, while Southampton ended with only 25 points, which left them 11 points adrift of safety.

The 2023/24 Premier League season begins on August 11 when the defending champions Manchester City travel to newcomers Burnley in a Friday night fixture.
