The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has appointed retired IPS officer Sharad Kumar as the new head of its Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU). This significant appointment was finalized during the BCCI’s Annual General Meeting on September 29, 2024. Kumar, who brings a wealth of experience from his distinguished career in law enforcement, will succeed KK Mishra in this crucial role.
Sharad Kumar’s Background and Career Highlights
Sharad Kumar, a 1979 batch IPS officer from the Haryana cadre, has had an illustrious career in various capacities. He is best known for his tenure as the Director General of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) from 2013 to 2017. During his time at the NIA, Kumar oversaw several high-profile investigations, including the Pathankot airbase attack by terrorists of the banned Jaish-e-Mohammed. His efforts were instrumental in disrupting terror financing networks and enhancing the NIA’s capabilities and infrastructure.
In recognition of his contributions to law enforcement, Kumar has been awarded the President’s Police Medal for Meritorious Services in 1996 and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Services in 2004. After his tenure at the NIA, he served as the Vigilance Commissioner in the Central Vigilance Commission from June 2018 to April 2020, where he also held the interim position of Central Vigilance Commissioner.
