Retired hockey player and Olympian Michael Kindo passes away

Michael Kindo, former Indian field hockey player who has represented the country at the Olympic Games and even in the hockey world cup, has breathed his last at 74.

Michael Kindo was under medical treatment for geriatric illness at the IGH for some time and unfortunately met his demise on Thursday in Rourkela.

Hailing from Jharkhand, Kindo played as a full back and clinched a bronze medal with the Indian team at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich.

A tribal icon and prolific defender, Kindo was a crucial member of the Indian team that went onto win the World Cup in 1975. Later, he was also bestowed with the coveted Arjuna Award.

The news was aired officially by Sports & Youth Services Department of Odisha Govt.

“We are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of legendary hockey player, Olympian and Arjuna Awardee, Michael Kindo. He represented India at the Munich 1972 Olympic Games, winning the bronze medal and was also a member of the 1975 World Cup winning team,” the official Twitter handle of the Indian hockey team mourned the death of the retired international.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time. May his soul find eternal peace.”

Chief Minister of Odisha Naveen Patnaik also expressed his condolences.
