In a bold suggestion that could reshape the dynamics of the Indian Premier League (IPL), former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif has urged the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) to convince Rohit Sharma to take over as their captain. This recommendation comes at a time when RCB is looking to revamp its strategy and leadership to finally clinch the elusive IPL title.
The Case for Rohit Sharma
Rohit Sharma, often hailed as one of the most successful captains in IPL history, has led the Mumbai Indians (MI) to five IPL titles. His leadership qualities, strategic acumen, and ability to build a cohesive team have been widely acknowledged. Kaif believes that these attributes make Rohit the perfect candidate to lead RCB, a team that has consistently underperformed despite having a star-studded lineup.
“Rohit Sharma should play as a captain only in the IPL because he is such a great captain. He has come after winning the T20 World Cup. He would have offered. We know people would have been calling him and asking him to play for them. I feel he should take the role of a captain only, whichever franchise is offering it,” Kaif told Star Sports.
“RCB should take this chance and somehow convince Rohit and make him the captain. He might not score that much as a batter, he scores forties and fifties, but I believe Rohit knows how to build an XI very well,” Kaif added.

Since its inception, RCB has struggled with leadership stability. The team has seen several captains, including Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis, but has yet to secure an IPL title. Kohli, despite being one of the best batsmen in the world, stepped down from captaincy after the 2021 season, citing the need to focus on his batting. Du Plessis took over but could not change the team’s fortunes significantly.
