Ravichandran Ashwin wants Ishant Sharma to scale the 400 test wickets mark

Ishant Sharma became the third Indian pacer to claim 300 wickets in the longest format of the game on Day 4. Teammate Ashwin lavished praise on the veteran pacer and wishes him to see reach the 400 test wicket mark as well in the future.

Ishant Sharma, now has a career spanned over 14 years now. While his efficacy in the shorter format might have fizzled out, he is still one of the first choice bowlers for the country in test cricket. He got his 300th wicket with the dismissal of Dan Lawrence on the fourth day of the first test in Chennai.

Ashwin, who is himself only 14 wickets away from the 400-wicket milestone, labelled Sharma as one of the most hard-working players in the Indian dressing room.

“Look, Ishant has been one of the most hard-working cricketers, that I have seen in that Indian team dressing room.

“He has worked extremely hard, for more than just one reason, because being that tall (6 ft 4 inch) itself requires a lot of facets to be managed through a career which is spanned out through almost 14 years now,”

Ishant Sharma, who has 98 test appearances under his belt, will only become the second Indian pacer to reach the elusive 100 test mark.

The off-spinner recalled the pacer’s iconic spell to Ricky Ponting in the famous Perth win, 12 years ago. Ashwin also noted that reaching three-digit appearances for a pacer is no joke and wished for him to reach more milestones.

“Ishant, who went to Australia and got Ricky Ponting out (in 2007-08), and then has gone through so many other tours, had his fair share of injuries, for a fast bowler to get close to 100 Tests in India is not a joke and it is fantastic fantastic achievement,” said the wily off-spinner.

“I can keep going on and keep complimenting Ishant, but I really wish to see him get to 400 and probably 500 wickets, which should be sort of road map for a lot of Indian quicks going forward.”

The 32-year-old had made his test debut against Bangladesh away from home in 2007. His six foot five physical frame was a huge asset for the team when they toured abroad. The natural ability to bring the ball back in coupled with the extra bounce he was able to extract from the wicket by hitting the deck, became a major problem for the batsmen.
