India’s stylish opening batsman Rohit Sharma, who has recovered well from his hamstring injury and has currently been under quarantine in Sydney, will join the Test squad in Melbourne on Wednesday. However, there is still no surety on whether he will be featured in the third Test which is starting from January 7.
India head coach Ravi Shastri on Tuesday said to the media that the team management will talk to him about how his condition is before taking a call on his availability.
“Rohit joins the team tomorrow. We will have a chat with him to see where he is placed physically because he has been quarantined for a couple of weeks. We will have to see now how he feels before we take the call,” said Shastri.
The right-handed swashbuckling opening batsman, who successfully led Mumbai Indians to their record-fifth IPL title in December, has suffered a hamstring injury during the cash-rich T20 league. However, he played in IPL’s Qualifier 1 and the final too and then he had to go through the rehab at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru as well.
On the other hand, Rohit Sharma didn’t fly with the India squad in Australia, which had created controversy too as the Indian captain Virat Kohli after reaching Australia said that the team management has not been kept informed about Rohit’s health. However, Kohli had said that he would have liked the opener to be with the squad and work on his fitness in Australia just like Wriddhiman Saha.
Rohit Sharma reached Australia in mid-December before the start of the Test series. However, being quarantined in Sydney, he did not have any practice session and that could be rusty as well for Rohit Sharma which is probably why Ravi Shastri said that the team will take a call later.
As far as Team India’s current status is concerned, they faced a humiliating defeat in the first Test whereas registered a convincing victory by 8 wickets in the second one and levelled the series as well.
