A lot has been happening in the Indian cricketing scene in recent times. A brilliant ODI series comeback against Australia, a blistering T20 series start against New Zealand, the discovery of KL Rahul’s wicket keeping talent, and the list goes on. However, the one topic that is taxing the minds of the supporters is the ongoing indefinite hiatus of Mahendra Singh Dhoni. One speculation after another, now there is a new opinion from the head coach Ravi Shastri himself, who believes this year’s IPL season will have the answer.
While Mahendra Singh Dhoni was excluded from the BCCI’s contract list this year, Ravi Shastri has always been open about his opinion on the former skipper’s future on the 22 yards, pointing at the 2020 Indian Premier League season as the ultimatum.
In a recent interview with Sportstar, Shastri was questioned on the matter, and the coach has possibly hinted at Dhoni’s future in cricket.
“Exactly what I wanted to ask you. There is IPL coming. Uske baad tum dekho (Then you’ll see.) Everyone will know. He will know, selectors will know, the captain will know seeing him, and more important than anything else he will know. What I’m trying to tell the people is he is the last person to impose himself on anything. You know him. I know him.”
Dhoni has been out of international duty since the 2019 Cricket World Cup, and amongst the rumours of an oncoming announcement of retirement from all formats, the owners of Chennai Super Kings recently gave green signal on their captain’s future with the IPL franchise.
Shastri continued: “For years, you know that he’s been dead honest when it comes to things of that sort, like when he gave up Test cricket. There was no thing of 100 Tests because he is not the guy who will impose on himself. I don’t know if he started practising as yet or not, but I’m sure if he’s keen on the IPL, everything will come out now and he will be ready. For all you know, he may start the IPL, if he doesn’t feel good he’ll say ‘Thank you very much.’”
