The Indian pair who are unseeded for the tournament put up a stupendous show on display to outclass their opponents 21-18, 18-21, 21-17 in a match that lasted over an hour.

The win marks only the second time the Indians have beaten the Malaysian pair with the previous one coming in last year’s Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

Ponnappa and Rankireddy will now face off against Indonesia’s Alfian Eko Prasetya and Marsheilla Gischa Islami in the second round.

Meanwhile it was a mixed bag of results in the men’s singles. Kidambi Srikanth got past to the next round while Sourabh Verma’s tournament came to an early end.

Srikanth’s victory was however not straightforward as he was made to work hard right from the word go. He finally got over his Chinese opponent Ren Peng 21-13, 17-21, 21-19.

Subhankar Dey on the other hand had a very lucky outing after being handed a walkover by top seed and world number 1, Kento Momota of Japan.

Women’s singles saw Sai Uttejitha Rao Chukka make the early exit after losing 17-21, 7-21 to China’s Chen Xiao Xin.
