Former Indian cricket captain and head coach, Rahul Dravid, has left an indelible mark on the sport. Sunil Gavaskar highlights Rahul Dravid’s achievements

Rahul Dravid’s career as a player was marked by unwavering dedication, technical brilliance, and resilience. His batting prowess, especially in Test cricket, earned him the moniker “The Wall.” Dravid’s ability to anchor innings and face the best bowlers worldwide is etched in cricketing history.

Dravid led the Indian cricket team with grace and integrity. His tenure as captain saw notable victories, including India’s first-ever Test series win in the West Indies in 35 years. His leadership was characterized by humility, strategic acumen, and a commitment to nurturing young talent.

In his second innings, Dravid transitioned seamlessly from player to mentor. As the head of the National Cricket Academy and coach across age groups, he played a pivotal role in shaping future stars. His emphasis on technique, discipline, and character development has borne fruit.

Dravid’s achievements transcended party lines, caste, creed, and communities. His performances brought joy to millions of cricket enthusiasts across India. Whether in the bustling streets of Mumbai or the serene villages of Kerala, Dravid’s impact resonated far and wide.

Dravid’s coaching stint culminated in India’s T20 World Cup victory in 2024. Under his guidance, the team conquered the USA and the West Indies. This achievement further underscores his influence on Indian cricket.

“It would be apt if the Government of India honours him with the Bharat Ratna, for that’s what he has truly been,” Gavaskar wrote in his column for the Mid-Day, highlighting Dravid’s achievements as a player, captain and coach.

“Earlier in the year, the Bharat Ratna was given to some leaders who had done yeoman service to society. Even their most ardent supporters will agree that the influence they wielded was mostly restricted to their party and to the part of the country where they came from. Dravid’s achievements have given joy across all party lines and across caste, creed, and communities and brought untold happiness to the whole country surely, that deserves the highest accolade the country can give.

“C’mon everybody, please join me in asking the Government to recognise one of the greatest sons of India. Bharat Ratna, Rahul Sharad Dravid. Sounds terrific, doesn’t it?” Gavaskar added.
