Rahul Chahar might be in line for his second-ever call-up for his national side for the upcoming five-match T20 series against England. The inclusion of Chahar looms over the uncertainty behind Varun Chakravarthy and Rahul Tewatia’s availability, who failed their respective fitness tests earlier.
The leg-spinner has been in the bio-bubble with the Indian contingent since the start of the test series in February. This makes him the automatic choice, should Chakravarthy and Tewatia strikeout. He was also involved in the training session along with the rest of the team on Monday.
While the team management opted to release the standby players such as Shahbaz Nadeem, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Shahbaz Nadeem and Priyank Panchal for the Vijay Hazare trophy, Chahar stayed back with the first team.
Chahar had made his debut for India in the shortest format during their tour to the Caribbean in 2019. He had picked up one wicket, but never made the squad following the series.
He has been a vital cog for Mumbai Indians over the last two winning seasons. The 21-year-old is Mumbai Indians’ first choice spinner with Krunal Pandya alongside him. The champions have added the experienced Piyush Chawla as well to work with Chahar in the team.
As reported earlier, the duo of Chakravarthy and Tewatia failed to pass the fitness test in their first attempt in Bangalore while their results from the second attempt in Ahmedabad is yet to be known.
It is believed that Tewatia has cleared the test in the second attempt as he was also seen training with the team. However, the same can’t be said for Chakravarthy who has been reportedly sent back to the NCA to work on his fitness.
India will take on England in their first-ever five-match T20 series at home. If the hosts do manage to replicate a whitewash much like they did against New Zealand last year, they have a chance to top the ICC Rankings ahead of the T20 World Cup.
