Rahmanullah Gurbaz, the wicketkeeper-batter for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), is set to return to the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 after a brief hiatus. Gurbaz had to leave midway through the tournament due to his mother’s illness. He flew back to his home country, Afghanistan, to be with her.

Gurbaz took to Twitter to inform his fans about his short break and assured them of his return. He wrote, “After a short break from IPL due to my mother’s illness, I will join my KKR family very soon, thanks for all the messages and prayers, alhamdulillah she is feeling better now thanks”.

KKR, currently leading the IPL 2024 table with 16 points from 8 wins in 11 matches, is virtually certain to secure a place in the playoffs. The team has three league matches left to play – against Mumbai Indians on May 11, Gujarat Titans on May 13, and Rajasthan Royals on May 19. The IPL playoffs will begin with the Eliminator on May 22 in Ahmedabad, followed by Qualifier 2 on May 24 in Chennai and the final on May 26 in Chennai.

Gurbaz is expected to rejoin the team before the playoffs. His return will undoubtedly boost the team’s morale and add depth to their batting line-up. Despite his absence, KKR has been performing exceptionally well, with players like Phil Salt and Sunil Narine providing explosive starts.

Gurbaz joined GT in 2023 at a base price of Rs 50 lakh and scored 227 runs in 7 matches for the franchise at a strike rate of 133.53 with 2 fifties. He was traded at his base price by KKR ahead of IPL 2024. Although he hasn’t played a single game this season so far, his return could provide KKR with additional options in their batting order.
