R Praggananandhaa defeats Magnus Carlsen for the second time in three months

Praggananandhaa became a Grandmaster when he was 12 years old.

R Praggananandhaa appears to gradually become one of the greatest Chess success stories from the Indian subcontinent, and his recent form has seen him defeat World Champion Magnus Carlsen for the second time in his career.

From a very young age, Praggananandhaa has been pulling off one surprise after another. In February this year, the Indian teenager defeated World Champion Magnus Carlsen in the eight round of Airthings Masters, an online rapid chess competition. With black pieces, he managed to defeat – in 39 moves – one of the greatest chess players in history. A few months later, he managed to become the sole winner of Reykjavik Open Chess Tournament 2022.

Now, Praggananandhaa has done it again. Chessable Masters online rapid chess tournament saw Carlsen being defeated by the rising star of world chess for the second time in the period of a quarter year.

The match was hardly going in the favour of either of the competitors, instead slowly reaching for a draw. However, the world champion made an uncharacteristic mistake in the late stage of the match, leading the young Indian to push forward for a victory, which he ultimately managed to attain.

PRAGGANANANDHAA WAS NOT THRILLED ABOUT HIS GAME AND WAS NOT HAPPY TO WIN BECAUSE OF AN ONE MOVE BLUNDER

“I’m not so thrilled about my game quality. I’m missing some stuff, some tricks, and some tactics so I need to be sharper,” Praggananandhaa commented following the victory.

Because he won due to an unexpected one move blunder by Carlsen, the Indian, who is also busy completing his school examinations, said that he did not want to win that way.

However, Praggananandhaa’s chances at reaching the knockout stage of the $150,000 competition is still slim, especially when compared to the second-ranked Carlsen. China’s Wei Yi is the sole leader of the competition at the moment.
