Team India off-spinner is likely to miss the upcoming home series against West Indies. The 34-year-old’s resurgence in white-ball continues ever since his call-up to the squad for the T20 World Cup.

R Ashwin set to miss limited overs series against West Indies

Ashwin is reportedly not available for selection for the three ODIs and three T20Is against the West Indies. The spinner is apparently undergoing treatment which causes him to miss the assignment.

The veteran did not enjoy the best of campaigns in South Africa. He was understandably not among the wickets in the Test series given the nature of the pitches. But, he was far behind compared to the South African spinners in the ODI series.

The selection committee will meet later this week to choose the team for the upcoming set of matches. The meeting was slated to take place yesterday, but it was put off due to the unavailability of Rahul Dravid and others, who have travelled from South Africa after the tour.

Ashwin is set to be a long-term presence within the team in the white ball setup as well. His experience is said to be highly valuable within the camp especially with crucial ICC events in the form of the T20 World Cup 2022 and 2023 World Cup coming up. His current treatment will keep him out of action for a reported period of three weeks.

Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar had voiced his displeasure over Ashwin’s inclusion into the first team and his performances in the Rainbow Nation. Speaking to ESPN Cricinfo, Manjrekar said:

“Ashwin strangely came back into India’s ODI plans for some reason. India paid a price for that. He played the two crucial games, did nothing much. (Yuzvendra) Chahal also under the scanner. Prasidh Krishna needs to be backed a bit more. Also, in 50-overs, Mohammed Shami can be a good option,”

The ODI matches against West Indies will take place at Ahmedabad while Kolkata will host the three match T20I series.
